Hey Barbie - speaking of accents....dp you have dialects and accents in Gernmany? Probably a silly question, huh?

Sure we do - and no, not a silly question. It's different from north to south in Germany, too, even different from northern Bavaria to southern Bavaria, and to make matters worse, there are also big differences in accents and dialects in the different towns and villages - I've been living in this small town for nearly 9 years now - and still have trouble sometimes to understand the local dialect, although I'm just from the city, only 9 miles down the road! Same with the farmers that sell their stuff at the market in Schweinfurt - they're from Sennfeld or Gochsheim, just a few miles away, and when you talk to them (especially the elder ones), it's kinda like talking to a foreigner! I always imagine it must be hell on a visitor from another country that had German classes and comes to a Bavarian village - not a chance for him/her to understand a word from the locals if they speak in their "native" tongue!

When I came to Bavaria at age 9, no one understood me because I had a heavy Swabian accent (grew up near Stuttgart) - now I adapt to every accent rather quickly but also unwillingly in order to fit in

Hopefully you pick up on the southern accent without a problem. Everyone I talk to that's not from the South loves it, and until Australia, I was completely unaware I even had an accent! Talk about an eye opener!

We'll see, Garrett. Although a friend of ours once told me he wished he could speak English as clear and well as I do, and he was American! I think I'm lacking a specific accent so far, but that may well change in a few weeks! In fact, if I were a betting person, I'd for sure place money on that fact!

for years I had been told I didn't have an accent (I was raised by someone from England married to someone from Kentucky, in the northern states) then we moved to VA - talk about culture shock; just recently someone who works for me told me there was no mistaking I was from the South - have no idea when that happened but it did! everyone now and then if I listen to what I am saying I can pick up on a few, not so crisp, vowels!

The M&G's getting closer! YAY! Also means our flight's not much longer - I can't wait!! Since I'm coming all the way from GER and I'd like to bring something small for each of you, anything you associate with Europe or Germany in particular that you'd like to have? Can I bring canned sausage with me to the States or is importing meat prohibited? :hmm:

I confess I have no idea what the laws are on bringing stuff in. I'll do some research. Just bring yourselves! That's all we need!

I got my airline tix today! YAY! MB here I come! I hope they are ready for the ChesneyWorld Invasion!

That's very sweet of you Barb. I don't know, you can pick a something you think I might like if you want to. I don't know about importing meat or food products either. I'm just looking forward to meeting everyone

Ok, I'll try to think of something - but be warned, I'm hopeless with gifts! Looking forward to meet everybody, too - the fact that we planned the rest of our trip around this should say all it needs
